Log on to mumbaivotes.com know more about the right candidate

When Vivek Gilani first cast his vote almost a decade ago, he did not know who the right candidate was. He was impressed by Atal Bihari Vajpayee's oratory and poetry and decided to stick to a local BJP corporator. After all these years, he knows the importance of making a conscious deliberate attempt at getting to know the right representative.

Gilani (an environmental engineer), with the support of a few like-minded people, is in the process of collating background information on electoral candidates, making it easier for people to choose their leaders. People can check out the representatives on websites such as mumbaivotes.com and praja.org before making a choice.

In an atmosphere where sceptics__disillusioned with the current governance scene__are looking for an excuse not to vote, these websites are a welcome tool. According to activists working for the cause, people usually shirk their right to franchise votes because they do not know whether to choose a "rogue, a thief or a scoundrel''. "Nobody goes through the trouble of verifying the details of the representatives. Somehow, people don't seem to have faith in those contesting the polls. So they feel it is best not to waste a vote,'' said H-West Federation's chairperson Shyama Kulkarni. "But neither is that a solution, nor an excuse. It is everyone's duty to know who is going to play a vital role in their wards.'' Perhaps, that's why the youth have come forward and have started gathering information about corporators and MLAs. From poring over archives to filing RTI queries to analysing the information received and then finally making it available to people, these youngsters are doing it all.

For example, members of the Praja group leveraged the RTI Act to find out how the 227 corporators in Mumbai had used the discretionary fund allotted to them during their official term of 2002-2006. Then they also prepared a performance audit. Then came a comprehensive report card about the city; residents across 23 wards rated public services, administrative staff and their political representatives.

"Our job was to create a software rather than a dialogue space. In fact, it is the government's job to provide transparency, increase the level of democracy and participation of people to bring out the best in democracy. But since the government does not seem to be doing that, we thought we could do it for people,'' said Saharsh David, founder of praja.org.

Organisers and volunteers of mumbaivotes.com have thought of an innovative way to achieve just that. Roping in students from various media colleges, they have started conducting research so that everything one would like to learn is available on the website before the 2009 elections. In fact, they are going to conduct one-minute impromptu interviews with corporators asking them what they have achieved in their tenure.

"We are inspired by Obama's words: We are the people we've been waiting for. It is our duty to make India an empowered democracy rather than just the largest democracy,'' said Gilani, founder of mumbaivotes.com. "By providing this sort of information on our local representatives, people can no longer excuse themselves from casting a vote saying they do not know whom to choose.'' From the number of FIRs filed, criminal convictions to pending court cases against a candidate, an extensive database will be made available.
"After all this is done, cross-referencing with the representative's election manifesto will reveal the patterns of his or her competence, consistency and dedication to deliver quality governance to citizens,'' added Gilani.

Mumbai-Jaagore. Enough is enough. Lets change this rot

This is not a forwarded chain email. I wrote it myself. I hope you all for once forward this important email to all instead of all the junk we all get and forward.

My blood boils today with what I have experienced in Mumbai in the last few days and over the years. This is unacceptable to me any more Enough is enough.
If you share the same anger and want to change things around you, what are YOU doing about it?. Lets not just blame the politicians, sloppy administration and create useless commentary, you and me are part of problem. Lets show our resilience Mumbaikars and Indians NOT by lighting candles, not by just expressing sympathy for the tragedy and having a conversation at the coffee table or at the bar over drinks, BUT ACTUALLY DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT. Oh and by the way if you find any of the so called "human rights activists" pull their guts out and ask them why they are not to be seen in Mumbai demanding human rights for the countless innocents who lost their lives here.

Jaagore India Jaago.

This is what I propose we can do

1. Let us demonstrate real democracy and actually cast our vote and vote the right candidates. If we don't have the right candidates standup and be counted or get the right candidates as our leaders. http://www.jaagore.com/ We don't cast our vote and then blame the politicians voted by special interest/illegal voters.

2. Lets not make the incompetent politicians get away easily by making them resign, lets tie a live grenade on their behind and actually make them accountable and force them to slog to fix the problems they have created. Confront them by all means possible, media, letters, emails, sms, beat the shit out of them.

3. Lets stick our head out and actually support the real competent people who can get the job done. Support the countless security people NSG, armed forces including Mumbai police who took the bullets for us and who confronted the terrorists. Also people like Manmohan Singh and P. Chidambaram. I feel Kiran Bedi needs be brought somehow into some responsible position in the security administration.

4. Lets not kid ourselves Pakistan is the epicenter of terrorism and their people actively support it. Lets put pressure on Pakistan and its people to get hold on these terrorist elements they are nurturing. There will be collateral damage and so be it, we have paid enough of this collateral damage. God willing I hope the Indian goverment goes in hot pursuit of these terrorists inside Pakistan. This is the most important, let use the method so successfully used by Mahatma Gandhi to get us this freedom in the first place. Let us use non co-operation as a tool to drive Pakistan to the wall. Don't have any ties with Pakistan or their products or services. No Pakistani music, movies, cricket. For those outside India, don't buy clothes or shoes made in Pakistan.

Kerala CM just proved that he is a dog

People of Kerala, do you want to be ruled by a dog. Vote him out. Make him lose his security deposit in the next election. Put pressure on your local MLAs to get rid of him. Confront him, show him his place. Don't let anyone disrespect our nation's martyr's and get away with it. I urge the media to boycott him, for once show this dog his place.
